Cannabis and Digital Marketing – Big Deal
Gilad Sasson – Digital & SEO Senior Consultant
The second DMIEXPO session about Cannabis was hosted by Gilad Sasson, a senior consultant from Nekuda web solutions.
Cannabis holds an interesting grey space in the market right now. In some places it is legal, but in other places it is still not legal. As such as a digital marketer, how do you advertise your cannabis products?
Digital marketing and cannabis have an interesting relationship. As stated before, cannabis is not legal everywhere. In addition, if you want to advertise online, there are a few big players in the game, namely Google and Facebook, that will not let you directly advertise cannabis on their platforms. With such a big handicap as a digital marketer, what are you supposed to do?
Fortunately, there are alternatives that allow you to bypass the rules of Google and Facebook.
Firstly, it is important to understand that digital marketing for cannabis is not really any different than digital marketing for any other product or service. You need to practice good SEO (search engine optimization) techniques. If you don’t, it does not matter what you are advertising, you are bound to fail.

One of the most important things you should do is good content marketing. Good information naturally ranks higher. If you provide good information people will come to you as an expert in the field.
However, you need to do more than just create good content. You can’t think that just because you built it, customers will come.
Rather, also focus on other strong SEO techniques such as link building, SMS marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing, organic marketing, and social media.
When you are doing these things, make sure that you are above board. That is, follow the rules of the platforms you are using. For example, do not use black hat marketing techniques, such as making many fake accounts to advertise your products. It does not matter what product or service you are advertising, Google and Facebook will not allow it.
